Roof Load

Roof load refers to the total weight a roofing system must support over its lifespan. It includes both permanent and temporary forces acting on the structure.

Dead load consists of the weight of the roof itself, including decking, shingles, insulation, and structural components. This load remains constant throughout the roof’s life.

Live load includes temporary forces such as snow accumulation, wind pressure, maintenance workers, and equipment placed on the roof.

Roof structures must be engineered to safely distribute these loads to walls and foundations without failure. Load calculations are essential during design and must comply with building codes and regional climate conditions.

In areas with heavy snowfall, roof load capacity becomes especially important to prevent structural collapse or deformation.

Proper design ensures long-term durability, safety, and compliance with engineering standards.
