Cedar Roof Surface Erosion

Surface erosion occurs when the outer fibers of cedar shakes gradually wear away due to long-term exposure to weather, UV radiation, rain, and wind-driven debris.

As cedar ages, environmental exposure slowly breaks down the wood surface, creating rough textures, thinning material, and reduced moisture resistance. Severe erosion may expose deeper wood layers and accelerate structural deterioration.

Surface erosion is more common on roof sections with direct sun exposure or harsh weather conditions. Poor maintenance and prolonged moss growth can also increase erosion rates.

Routine cleaning, treatment, and inspections help slow surface deterioration and preserve cedar roof performance.

While mild erosion is part of the natural aging process, excessive erosion may indicate the roof is approaching the end of its functional lifespan.
